Panamanian Ox Cart Driver

On a very hot day in Panama I took an ox cart ride to the Ron Abuelo Rum distillery. I sun was not only hot but high in the sky. As we disembarked the carts this drivers face captured my attention and imagination. It was Carnival and most businesses were closed, including the distillery, but we were on a specially arranged visit and this man was one of three who hooked their oxen up to their carts and drove us to the distillery when he could just have easily stayed home and celebrated. By the way, 30 year old Rum is quite a treat.

Embera Lady

A couple of weeks ago, on a trip to Panama, I was fortunate enough to visit a village of the Embera people. It was an enlightening opportunity. The people were friendly and welcoming. We were able to enjoy a delicious lunch with a local family. This amazing group are diligently working to keeping the native traditions alive while allowing small numbers of tourists to visit. They produce lovely handicrafts and live off the land and the adjoining river. This lady was a fine example of the beautiful faces I saw there.
