Mo Better Blues

I had some left over paint and time on my hands - not to mention the rainy weather which was perfect for staying inside with some music. I scrambled around and found this reference. It's been in my "to do" pile for a long time. I loved his blue guitar!

Shemikia Sings the Blues

Just needed to listen to some music and paint today. Too much tragedy in the news lately. I hardly even noticed the rain...just zoned out in my own little world. I had a difficult time photographing this one - some small details get lost.

Greg lives in my building and is such a warm, charming man. Late one evening I met him in the lobby where he was leaning on the desk talking to the concierge. I snapped a photo on my cell phone and forgot about it. While cleaning out all the excess stuff stored on my phone I ran across it again. He always has such a charming smile so with free time on my hands I did this little study.

After The Dance

It's been a long dry spell but I finally got inspired. Over the years I have painted many dancers but this one never had much appeal for me until just now. I'm have no idea why I feel so differently about her suddenly but I'm so happy she finally "spoke" to me. I am pretty happy with the end result so it all turned out for the best. She's been in my pile of references for years!

The Old Violinist - SOLD

I am completely captivated by this old gentleman. His bow is nearly shot and his violin has seen better days and yet he still plays with all the love & care as if it were a Stradivarius. The music as sweet as a fresh breeze and as gentle as a kitten step.

Michael "Jerry Garcia" Menke - SOLD

I met this very interesting gentleman and his wife on a river cruise through Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. He was simply Jerry Garcia to me. A delightful person with a real zest for life - sometimes is a rare find. They run a private pre-K school in Seattle. I rather hope they play Grateful Dead music at nap time!

Hugh - SOLD

This is Hugh. He's a quiet soul who lives in my building. He makes an interesting and engaging conversationalist once you get to know him. I think he's very happy in his own skin and has no need for the drama that some people fill their lives with. He is well traveled, educated with a charming sense of humor. I've heard a rumor that he will be moving , perhaps in a few months. It's for that reason I decided to paint him. I never want to forget this charming,  gentle soul.

Shitake- Sold

I can hardly believe it missed uploading this one. It's part of my vegatable series. This is another one I actually do not hate. I figured since garlic worked I may as well throw in a mushroom...

Slash - SOLD

A friend lent me his autobiography and I was hooked. I wasn't overly fond of Gun N Roses, or Velvet Revolver when I was younger but I've grown to appreciate their music. Some of these musicians from my youth are very interesting and I'm glad they've survived their worst days. What they gave us by sharing their talent and dedication is immeasurable.

Great Garlic - Sold

Ok I'm done with this series! And garlic may not be a vegetable and since I love them, it hardly works as the "vegetables I hate" thing. But the three together work well as a grouping. Normally I paint with very dark backgrounds - this time I wanted to keep it light and see what feel that might create.

Dreaded Green Pepper - Sold

This is starting to be fun - a series on vegetables that I hate! I have some small canvases and just started with my onion then moved on to this. Perhaps a squash will be next!

Onion on a Table - Sold

I hate raw onions! But I do think they are interesting to look at. Maybe I will do a whole series of all the vegatables I hate. Perhaps in doing so I might find a new appreciation for them huh?! It's doubtful but one never knows.

Croation Winery - SOLD

This is Ivan Boban. He's a young Croation guide. We were at a winery and I saw him sitting at a table looking at a wine label. The lighting was quite dramatic so I quickly snapped a photo so I could capture this lovely moment forever. It's been a couple of years but I finally had a few days to work on it. He's much better looking than I have been able to depict but the feel of the moment is perfect.

My African Queen - SOLD

My daughter actually photographed this very regal looking woman while we were in Kenya at Thanksgiving. We visited a tribal village and the women were all wearing these elaborate wedding necklaces. Layers of beads and weaving in amazing bright colors. I found this woman particularly striking with her long slim neck and way her hair came to a point at the center of her face - she was just exquisite.
